Thick red line (2010)

The little village of Kolontar (Hungary) was evacuated because of an industrial accident at the Ajkai Timföldgyár alumina plant. A burst reservoir spilled hazardous sludge on Monday 04 October 2010. The mud was released as a 1,2 m (3,7 ft) wave, flooding several nearby localities. The flow was powerful enough to move cars and vans. At least nine people died, and more than hundred people were injured. About 40 square kilometres (15 square miles) of land were initially affected. About 700,000 cubic meters of highly alkaline red was released sludge into the area. This is a photo essay of the horizontal red line which marks on everything (houses, trees, objects, etc.) the level of the mud.
